What is a Men’s Shed?

A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.

The UK Men’s Shed Association grew out of a movement which started in Australia. The original Shedders realised the value of  coming together around practical tasks on a regular basis, particularly if they had a designated place or workshop where tools and work in progress could be stored.

Thetford Men’s Shed

We are in the process of setting up our very own Men’s Shed in Thetford, using our existing bike shop at 53 York Way, Thetford as a base to begin with. Initially the Shed will focus on bike repairs and maintenance, though this is flexible and largely dependent upon the needs and wants of the Shedders.

Through mutual enjoyment of practical activities such as carpentry, furniture renovation, and bike repair, Thetford Men’s Shed offers a place of leisure where men come together to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace. Whichever activities are pursued, the essence of our Shed is more than just a building; it is a safe and friendly place where men of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can socialise, pursue hobbies and share skills.

We are still in the early stages of the planning process and welcome anyone who is interested in joining. For more information, please contact 01842 821459
