Green Ventures Bikes – A community bike recycling project

The Green Ventures Bikes project is keeping old and discarded bicycles out of landfill, repairing as many as possible, to put them back on the road in order to support the promotion of cycling and healthy lifestyles across Thetford.

The project as part of the Thetford Healthy Town is working closely with other partners and service providers to promote cycling in and around Thetford.   The project has secured funding through to March 2011.

Bicycles are currently being collected from Household Waste sites and recycled with also collections of bikes donated by members of the public.  The bikes are taken to the Keystone Enterprise Factory (KEF) where they are assessed and sorted with then some being dismantled for parts whilst others will be repaired and serviced.

Bikes will be offered to businesses to create pools of bikes and some made available at no cost on a referral basis.

Alan Flack Director of Social Enterprise at Keystone says "the aim is to make the bikes as affordable as possible to the public along with making the project sustainable after the funding comes to an end so that we encourage as many people as we can to enjoy riding a bike in and around the beautiful surroundings of Thetford"

In the longer term, the project will also provide cycle training, bike maintenance training and hire of workshop space to further encourage cycling across the area.
