What is a Men’s Shed?
A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.
The UK Men’s Shed Association grew out of a movement which started in Australia. The original Shedders realised the value of coming together around practical tasks on a regular basis, particularly if they had a designated place or workshop where tools and work in progress could be stored.

Thetford Men’s Shed
Through mutual enjoyment of practical activities such as carpentry, furniture renovation, and bike repair, Thetford Men’s Shed offers a place of leisure where men come together to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace. Whichever activities are pursued, the essence of our Shed is more than just a building; it is a safe and friendly place where men of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can socialise, pursue hobbies and share skills.
The Bike Shed
The Bike Shed is based at 53 York Way, opposite the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre and offers local men opportunities to learn about bike repairs and maintenance and work together to complete a whole range of tasks. In addition to bike fixing, the Shedders are currently building a soapbox to take part in the Thetford Town Council’s Soapbox Challenge in April 2017. Shedders meet every Tuesday from 1 – 4:30pm.
The Grow Shed
Shortly after the opening of the Bike Shed, some allotments were donated by the Thetford Town Council to Keystone on the Mundford Road. This was to become the site of the Grow Shed. When Keystone took over the allotments they were a wilderness of old plants and debris. However, thanks to the hard work of a group of young people from the Prince’s Trust, who spent over a week weeding and clearing, we now have a fresh and fertile blank canvas. The Grow Shed has been put to bed for the winter but will be back open in January 2018!
The Wood Shed
The newest addition to the Shed family, the Wood Shed started making plans in November 2017. Shedders hope to recycle and reuse old pallets by turning them into pieces of furniture. The Shed was awarded money from the Cynthia Della Hoy Croxton Charity to help with the set up costs and should be up and running in early 2018.

Soapbox Challenge 2017
On 23rd April the Thetford Men’s Shed took part in the Thetford Town Council’s Soapbox Derby. It was a fantastic event and a great opportunity for the Shedders to showcase what they’ve been up to over the past few months. They created a dragon-themed soapbox to tie in with St. Georges day and though it wasn’t the speediest, it finished in 9th place out of 11, it was certainly the crowd favourite. The whole experience was good fun for the Shedders and we hope to take part again next year.
