What is A*spire?
A*spire is a project aimed at raising the aspirations of children and young people in Thetford.
The A*spire project provides an open-access, free monthly event for 8-16 year olds. It was initially funded by Children in Need for three years until December 2014, at which point Keystone took over funding until March 2015 when new funding was secured from Children in Need for a further three years, starting in April 2015. Each month we hold a fun, inclusive two-hour workshop with activities based around their occupation or area of expertise. The aim is to build young people’s aspirations and show them a variety of options for potential future career paths.
Where and When?
Sessions take place at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre on the last Saturday of each month from:
- 10:30 – 12:30 (Ages 8-12 Years)
- 1pm – 3pm (Ages 13-16 Years)**
DATES FOR ASPIRE 2017:
**These sessions are built on on the following Wednesdays in our Positive Activities sessions, held on Wednesdays from 4 – 6pm.
“A*spire provides children and young people with a taster of professions that could be attainable to them if they work hard and make positive choices. By introducing young people in Thetford to local adults who are successful in their fields, we aim to broaden horizons and encourage aspiration and ambition. We believe the experiences offered by A*spire will make a lasting impression on young people at a crucial time in their lives”.
So far sessions have included computer robotics, photography, interior design, animal care, drama, rhythmic gymnastics, street dance, cookery, bike maintenance, public speaking and arts and crafts.
The feedback from parents, young people and local teachers has been very positive.
We would welcome contact from people working in a range of fields to support the project by offering to lead a session. Please do get in touch if you feel you could come along and inspire local young people.
All young people must have a parental consent form to participate in activities. Forms can be picked up from the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre.
